We Without Wings anime review

Timid Takashi wants to escape to an alternate world where he is a heralded knight, but is held back by thoughts of his younger sister and his girlfriend. Part-timer and all-around upbeat guy Shuusuke has a disastrous first encounter with a woman who turns out to be his new co-worker. Handyman Hayato is a hard-boiled loner who has random encounters with two gangs and a girl with a uniform fetish. Throw in plenty of fan-service, random humor, an alternate medieval world, and your narrator DJ Condor, and you get We Without Wings – Under the Innocent Sky.

Do you like complicated stories revolving around multiple main characters? Do you like fanservice anime? Personally, this anime feels when you combine the anime Durarara!! with a ecchi anime. According to Wikipedia, We Without Wings (or Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai ), is an eroge visual novel developed by Navel and this anime got an English Dub by FUNimation. This anime is comedy, slice of life and harem series. There are 12 episodes + 1 OVA.

Story/Characters:

I decided to combine this topic together because the three main characters, Takashi, Shuusuke, and Hayato, have their own stories; however, these three stories actually intertwine if you are willing to go through all the way of the show. Ovarall in the anime besides the characters, this anime starts off confusing and slow. Once I watched the first episode, I was lost on which or who is telling the story. The anime constantly changes the perspective of the characters quite often. In one episode you might have Shuusuke or you might have all three in one episodes. Another bizarre thing this anime does is that the characters do random short fanservice activities and it is seen in a mystious realm with an old TV and a talking radio. In one of these shorts, you might see the girls having a girls’ night out or a sexy Christmas party. It is rather complicated to explain this :/

Anyway, I will explain the main male characters:

WWW Takashi

Takashi Haneda (voiced by Joel McDonald) is one of the three main characters you will meet. Takashi is a young man in high school who lives with only his young sister Kobato Haneda (on the far right of the Featured Image). He also has a girlfriend Asuka Watarai (second to the left) who she asked him to be boyfriend to avoid other boys. Takashi is just like any other student in high school but based on his personality, he is quite timid and shy. He also has a serious illness where whenever it starts happening, he gets sent to another world where is considered a hero named Lord Hawk in this fantasy realm. As we see his story, we see that he has to go through his daily life at home and school and his other life in the fantasy realm. It’s either he stays with these two girls or his hero life. I thought his story was pretty interesting because I believe most of us can relate to him. In public, he is just an average person in society but in his world, he is very important and even consider great in that world.

WWW shuusuke

Shuusuke Chitose (voiced by Ricco Fajardo) is the second protagonist of the series. Shuusuke is described as a chill guy who can be funny and a pervert, not to mention, he tries to get girls to like him. He also appears in Takashi’s world and he is named Eagle. Unlike Takashi, he is not a high school student but a freelancer. He works both as a book reviewer and waiter at Alexander’s cafe, a maid cafe and the owner is an engaged future husband who still acts in perverse manner. In his story, we see him meet another female character in the story, her name is Hiyoko Tamaizumi (the girl on the second to right) and she is a novelist who hopes to reach success in her books. Throughout the show, we see him try to help Hiyoko succeed with her writing and help her accept criticism. His story, whenever something funny happens to him, it is usually perverted and it involves with Hiyoko. Anyway, his story is funny and decent compared to Takashi.

WWW Hayoto

Hayato Narita (Scott Freeman) the third protagonist. Also not like Takashi or Shuusuke, Hayato is described as an antisocial handyman. He performs different jobs, even suspicious one, and display a really bad attitude towards everybody, including his friends, clients and women. Since he works in the night and acts grouchy, he is nicknamed Dracula or Drac for short. He also has connections to Takashi and Shuusuke in the fantasy world and his nickname is Falcon. In his story, Hayato must find a stolen bike for a young girl named Naru Ohtori (Far right). Along the way, he gets in loved with a gang war between the Phoenix and a Goth gang. To make matters worse, Naru falls in love with Hayato and tries to hit on him. While watching his side of the story, I was encountered by so many fanservice moments where I just had to face palm myself couple of times because I really wanted to knock some sense on Naru and remind her that it is not gonna happen with this grouch. Still, it is pretty funny that these two are the complete opposites and this makes the story humorous.

I will not go into details on the main girls or the other side characters because it will definitely be extensive for this review. Since the characters are part of the story, I don’t want t spoil the story.

Content:

This show straight out the bat shows fanservice in the first episode and to the final episode. There is one episode where is crosses the borderline. The show does not shy away from language either. The characters drop the F-bombs or Hayato curses girls, and yet they still like him. There is also an episode where a gang sings about the male genitals. What the heck? There is an OVA for this anime and it is about going to the spa. The fanservice first focuses on the guys and then the rest are for the girls.

Overall Review:

This anime is quite complicated to explain in this review without spoiling the story. Much like Durarara!!, the anime focuses on multiple characters in a busy town. But unlike DRRR!!, the anime is filled with ecchi moments and over the top humor. If you don’t mind the fanservice moments and the characters, you will find out the story is quite interesting and has a big twist at the end. As of now, I will end this review and let you decide on what you think. Have you seen this anime? If not, would you be willing to watch it? If you have any questions, comment below and I will try to answer it for you.

    • Thanks for visiting. That depends on what anime genre you want to watch. If you like action, I would say Dragon Ball Z or One Piece. If you want a story similar to this anime review without fanservice content, there is Durarara!!. DRRR is anime with great music and the characters are awesome in both English and Japanese Dub. Anyway, it depends on what type of genre you prefer.

      • Okay, I see. I think there was a second season to Durarara! (?) I should start with the first season, yeah? Also, you have any action animes that aren’t 300+ episodes? Yeah, I’m trying to keep things minimum…. ^^;

      • Yeah there is a second season and I recommend watching the first one. You can watch it in English Dub or Sub free at Crunchyroll. Not 300 eh? Okay then, there is Sword Art Online. It’s an anime that is about 25 episodes in parts 1 and 2. Besides DBZ or One Piece, there is Attack on Titan everybody talks about. It’s only 25 episodes. These are more mainstream anime.
