Newly reformatted in hard cover to mirror the original Japanese edition! Stylish, delicate, and consistently edgy, Der Mond collects the color illustrations of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, one of the founding member of Studio Gainax and the character designer for Neon Genesis Evangelion. This book includes 74 pages of paintings and designs devoted to Evangelion, plus another 50 pages from The Wings of Honneamise, Nadia: The Secret of the Blue Water, Blue Uru, and other works, including Sadamoto’s cover to Eric Clapton’s 1998 album, Pilgrim.
Fun fact: Der Mond is German for “The Moon”
In this book, Der Mond is an art book collecting many amazing art and sketches of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, a character designer and artist of the anime and manga Neon Genesis Evangelion and other anime like Nadia: The Secret of the Blue Water.
Der Mond collects art pieces of the manga Neon Genesis Evangelion and even includes rough sketches of the characters such as Shinji and Rei. Not just the manga but the book also includes poster designs of the Evangelion movie End of Evangelion. As a fan of the Evangelion manga, I really enjoyed Sadamoto-sensei’s artwork. The characters looks amazing and he really knows how to make the Eva’s terrifying good. After seeing the rough sketches of the characters, I was really surprised on how the characters were going to look like in the series; they almost look like as if their personality might be the opposite from the series. Also, there are some questionable art pieces that may not be suitable for minors. I say if you planning to grab a copy of your own, just be prepared to appreciate the art and have a clean mind.
Like the description stated, Sadamoto also did character designs of other series. In of the works he drew, he also did his version of the characters from the Fatal Fury video game. Besides games and anime, his work can also be found in Eric Clapton’s album, Pilgrim.
If you are an anime/manga artwork lover, you will like this. If you like Neon Genesis Evangelion, you will absolutely enjoy Sadamoto’s art. I also wanted to mention that the hardcover book is really huge. Rather than reading the book like a small manga, I had to read it while it covered my face. Besides that, it is really cool to have and the size of the book can be treated as if you have an art gallery in your hands. Check out the picture below to see the size.
