What would happen if Sailor Moon and Neon Genesis Evangelion got a baby together and it had plot twists? You get this anime. This adorable anime has many plot twists and dark themes that will blow your mind.
To better explain the story without giving away too much of the plot, it is about an 8th grade girl named Madoka Kaname living a normal life until she meets a new student named Homura Akemi. Madoka feels like she seen her but in a dream. She also meets a cat-like creature named Kyubey who is willing to give her the powers of a magical girl to fight off the evil witches that feed on negative emotions. By making a contract and making any wish she desires, a girl can become a magical girl but with a cost…their own life.
With that done, on to the review.
This anime consists of 12 short episodes and it continues on to the sequel Rebellion and many manga adaptations and spinoffs; Rebellion is considered the third movie and the first two movies are movie adaptations to the anime (this is what I heard and I have yet to see them).
The characters design are made to be cute and innocent in which I thought they look great on the main characters. The secondary characters also serve purpose to the show and the girls; Madoka’s mother is an example because she gives her advice about friendship and trust. . Madoka is the typical cute girl who was raised to love and cares only to help others and there is Homura who is described as enigmatic and powerful but harbors a secret. You either like the characters or despise them but their motivations and origins are not forgotten This anime really does a great job on each girl’s personality and you might even relate to them in essence.
Like I mentioned before, the anime can be quite dark and eerie. The witches’ appearance are not human-like as you expect but they are abstract creatures just like the Angels of Evangelion. They hide in secret realms known as Labyrinths and this where the eerie scenes occur. The animation for the Labyrinths are created as if you are walking in a nightmare and you are awake, it breaks away from the anime’s scenery and the background is more black and fuzzy.
The fight scenes are really great. The combat and the characters movements are top-notched. The battles can either be majestically magical or violent and explosive.
Story’s atmosphere was like a roller coaster, it starts off slow and cheery and it rises to dark and suspense and ends everything in a bang with both a bittersweet end. This anime really emphasize the theme of “give and tak”e and sacrifice.
This is anime is quite different than any magical series you are probably used to. Get ready to smile and then cry or get completely shocked. This short anime deals a lot in characters and story telling. I will admit, I feel that the story could expand a little bit more rather than just making the movie. If you like Magical girls but you are not into a dark story, this may not be your taste. Comment below if you have any questions or you want to discuss about this anime.
